SILSDEN AFC 2 v 0 ATHERTON L.R. Henderson 10, Everingham 25. Att. 104
COBBYDALERS MARCH ON WITH VITAL WIN
The Cobbydalers made one change from the team that played forty-eight hours earlier at Holker, Ben Cox replacing Wademan. The start wasn’t quite what Danny Forrest was asking for with Dan Illingworth misdirecting a pass across his own penalty area. It gave the visitors a chance but Josh Kaine cleared up and Silsden began to push the ball about with confidence.
Ten minutes in, Danny Bunch turned swiftly to shoot goalwards but the ball was cleared for a corner. Mark Trueman curled the ball into the box where Illingworth headed powerfully. Keeper Louis Murray managed to parry the ball but Tom HENDERSON was on hand to rifle it home.
Mark Everingham then saw a shot deflected for a corner before hitting another effort just wide of the far post. Cox almost punished an error by the visitor’s defence before Eastwood slid the ball through for EVERINGHAM to curl the ball into the net from the edge of the area.
Silsden took their foot off the pedal and were only saved by a point blank save by Callum Jacovlevs from Scott Lawrence. Twice Eastwood broke through the visitors’ midfield with some tricky footwork and, along with Trueman and Cox, the Yorkshiremen turned on the style but without an end product before Atherton broke down the left in the final minute of the half.
Ed Walker cut in from the left before being halted by Matty Moses, at the expense of a corner. Ashley Woodhead curled the ball across the Silsden goal area but neither attacker nor defender got a touch on it.
The visitors started the second half brightly and were unlucky not to be awarded a penalty. Silsden responded with Moses breaking up the right and curling a ball into the box. It just needed a touch but the reaction of the Silsden forwards was too slow.
The game began to open up as the players tired following Saturday’s games. Kaine managed to get in a shot from the edge of the L.R. area before Bunch fired over. At the other end Kaine, rather isolated, broke up an Atherton attack before Woodhead went close with a forty-yard free kick.
Chris Wademan replaced Henderson and was soon in the action, setting up a shot from Everingham whose effort went wide. Woodhead again and Adam Owens both went close.
Aaron Davis came on for Cox and soon showed his skills. Wademan had burst up the left and cut in on the goal-line. He slid the ball to Davis who saw his shot saved by the keeper’s feet. A minute later Trueman hit the bar with an exquisite chip. Bunch, who was almost “on his knees”, summoned up one last effort but his shot cleared the bar as did Eastwood’s in the final minute.
By the end of the game many players looked drained, having played two games in three days which included a long journey to Barrow. Credit must go to both teams for providing some Bank Holiday entertainment. Fifteen points from eighteen has delighted the management team. On Saturday the Cobbydalers face a tough trip to Alsager before travelling to Ashton Town on Tuesday.
