HOLKER OLD BOYS 1 v 2 SILSDEN AFCStanway 33. Everingham 16, Trueman 90. Att. 32
TRUEMAN’S LATE FREE KICK SEES SILSDEN HOME
As the game went into stoppage time, Silsden’s Mark TRUEMAN struck a venomous shot from outside the penalty area, which rattled the Holker cross bar before endineg up in the net, to give the Cobbydalers all three points. In the last five games late winners have earned the Cobbydalers twelve points out of fifteen to push them into the top half of the table.
The home side had more players to select from than for the trip to Charnock Richard in midweek, where they lost eight nil. Following the midweek mauling, manager Scott Redhead left the club. Holker’s last win had been a month ago at home to Sandbach. That said, they did beat the Cobbydalers earlier in the season 3-1 in the Macron Cup.
Holker certainly put up a fight but the game was rather scrappy, with a hard pitch and a fierce wind down the slope, making conditions difficult. Silsden played up the slope in the first half. The home side had the first chance in the opening minute when Phillip Coombe shot over after a goal-mouth scramble. Trueman then went close with a curling free kick and Chris Wademan shot inches wide.
A strong run up the left by Josh Eastwood gave Mark Everingham a chance but keeper Morsby was able to gather the ball before EVERINGHAM slotted home from six yards after Matty Moses’ powerful run up the right, freed Tom Henderson who crossed into the Holker area.
Holker’s Jordan Brough then weaved his way past two defenders before Josh Kaine intervened and denied the home side another shooting opportunity. Another goalmouthscramble saw Jamie Pattinson waste another chance, before Holker equalised with a free-kick from STANWAY, very similar to Trueman’s winner, leaving Jacovlevs no chance of saving it.
Before the break Dan Illingworth headed over and Danny Bunch saw his effort saved by the keeper. At the other end Billy Moss wasted another good chance.
Holker went close twice in the first ten minutes of the second half, as Silsden found it hard to weight their through balls. One run by Wademan ended with the Silsden striker’s effort just clearing the bar. Henderson failed to convert two half chances before Morsby denied Eastwood, Everingham and Trueman. Desperate defending from Holker and ill-discipline resulted in three more cautions.
Ten minutes to go. Silsden were stretched as Holker broke clear, but once again Kaine spotted the danger and cleared up. Twice Wademan cut into the penalty area. His fist effort went inches wide and his second was deflected into the arms of the keeper. Silsden threw men forwards. Another foul, another free kick, but this time Trueman’s effort secured three points.
The Cobbydalers only have four games to go. On Easter Monday Atherton L.R. are the visitors. K.O. 3.00 pm. Danny Forrest is looking to maintain the good run but it’s still “one game at a time!”.
