SILSDEN AFC 2 v 1 ECCLESHALL F.C.
Everingham 65, Eastwood 88. Dovey 45 Att. 168
LATE DRAMA SAVES SILSDEN’S BLUSHES
The Cobbydalers faced Eccleshall for the second time in four days on a glorious sunny day. Silsden had won the mid-week encounter 4-2 with late goals from McNally and Henderson. Josh Eastwood replacing Chris Wademan was the only change in the Cobbydalers line up, whilst the visitors were forced to make eight changes. With the Staffordshire outfit having won only three league games this season, the result looked a formality but..it certainly wasn’t
The first half began well enough for the Cobbydalers with the visitors’ keeper failing to gather an Illingworth throw in. However the reaction of the Silsden forwards wasn’t quick enough. Mark Everingham then shot narrowly wide before a superb cross-field move ended with a cross from Matty Moses being cleared.
After ten minutes Eccleshall moved into the Silsden half but Callum Whittaker’s shot was way off target. Twice McNally went close for the Reds but both his dipping volley and powerful header cleared the bar. The dried out pitch caused problems in a half where passes were regularly misplaced.
The visitors plan to pack their defence was working. Only twice did they venture into the Silsden half but on the second occasion they were awarded a corner. The low in-swinger beat Tom Henderson on the near post and Derice RICHIE netted on forty-five minutes.
Eccleshall were lifted and proved more of a threat in the second half although Jacovlevs in the home goal was only troubled after a mix-up with Illingworth. Silsden huffed and puffed but only livened up when substitutes, Danny Bunch and Mark Trueman replaced the injured McNally and Ben Cox who just had “one of those days” after some recent excellent performances.
Silsden looked more lively and on sixty-five minutes Mark EVERINGHAM volleyed home Aaron Davis’ cross from the edge of the penalty area. Bunch certain livened things up with his pace and directness, hitting his first effort just over the bar. Everingham curled a ball agonisingly wide before Davis’ cross caused panic in the visitors’ goal area, a move which ended when Bunch’s bicycle kick cleared the bar.
Silsden pushed for the winner but Eccleshall continued to pack their goal area as half chances were not taken, Trueman going closest. Henderson saw two efforts go wide and Trueman had a shot blocked. Two minutes to go. Moses sent Henderson away down the right. Henderson reached the by-line and crossed low. EASTWOOD volleyed the ball home.
It wasn’t “the beautiful game” but sometimes teams have to win ugly. The week ended with nine points gained from three wins, including a victory at the League Leaders, Litherland REMYCA. Job done!
A tough visit on Tuesday to in-form Widnes, who have won their last six games, faces the Cobbydalers, before a trip to Holker Old Boys on Easter Saturday which is followed by the visit of Atherton L.R. on Easter Monday. (3.00pm)
