LITHERLAND REMYCA 1 v 2 SILSDEN AFC
McConchie 90 Forrest 76, Henderson 83. Att. 53
JACOVLEVS HEROICS THWART LEAGUE LEADERS
The Cobbydalers returned to complete a sequence of games against the top four on Saturday, playing Division leaders Litherland REMYCA. The heavy thunderstorms which had caused the postponement of over half the games in the table had drifted eastwards, leaving the sea breeze to dry up the pitch.
REMYCA had won the corresponding game at the Cobbydale Construction Stadium by the only goal, although even they acknowledged that Silsden’s equaliser should have stood. A draw at 3rd placed Charnock Richard and a victory at 4th placed Whitchurch had seen the Cobbydalers move up the table.
Manager Danny Forrest, who was without Storrie, Hancock and Trueman in his squad, brought in Tom Henderson on the right and Mark Everingham on the left.
REMYCA, with ninety six goals to their credit to date, were quickly out of the starting blocks . After only two minutes a free kick from Tony Cato was met by a firm header from Colin McDonald. It brought a breath-taking save from Calum Jacovlevs in the Silsden goal. That was to set the pattern for the whole game, the Cobbydalers guardian making save after save.
Holden managed to get around Matty Moses but Josh Kaine denied the home side another shooting opportunity, before Silsden’s first foray into their opponents half, with Henderson shooting wide after being freed by Nicky McNally. McNally then chased Josh Eastwood’s through ball but his shot cleared the bar. Fifteen minutes into the game, Jacovlevs denied Colin Quirk and then Lennon Whewell.
A break from Chris Wademan was finally halted by a third defender, before two long throw-ins from Dan Illingworth bothered the home defence. McNally freed Mark Everingham who cut in from the left. His shot was parried by the keeper before Chris Lowe denied McNally himself.
Midway through the half, Quirk opened up the Silsden defence with a mazy dribble, which gave Fowler a clear opening, but somehow Jacovlevs parried the shot before punching it clear. Despite the league leaders’ efforts, the Silsden back four held firm. Indeed, Silsden might have had a penalty on the stroke of half time when the ball struck Caton’s hand in the REMYCA penalty area.
The second half began with another great save from Jacovlevs but Silsden began to pose more of a threat than they had in the first. Eastwood and Ben Cox began to impose themselves and, when Wademan freed Henderson, the wide-man looked in the free but he slid the ball inside, where it was intercepted, rather than bearing down on the goal.
Moses made a fine tackle on Fowler then left back Danny Vincent burst down the left to cross low into the REMYCA area but Wilkie managed to clear it.
Sixty minutes gone. Jacovlevs saved after a half-cleared corner was driven back into the Silsden area. Silsden were almost succumbing to the pressure. A minute later Jacovlevs somehow twisted in mid-air to make the save of the game. The crowd gasped. A minute later Illingworth was finally turned at the near post but Quirk fired into the side netting. Moses broke up another attack. The Cobbydalers began to believe.
Forrest replaced Wademan with twenty five minutes left. The home side wasted one other chance before Illingworth’s long throw-in was headed home by FORREST in the seventy–eighth minute. Six minutes later, from a similar move, Eastwood set up Forrest, who rattled the cross-bar. HENDERSON followed up .Two-nil.
Could Silsden hold out? Quirk hit the bar with a header on ninety minutes and four minutes later the home side finally scored. McCONCHIE tapped in from a yard out. But the victory went to the Yorkshiremen.
The view from the home side was magnanimous. “You don’t win games if you don’t convert your chances”. The Cobbydalers were over “the proverbial” moon! A superb defensive performance with the star of the show, Jacovlevs, a tad unhappy. The Silsden keeper, an ever–present to date, is suspended for the midweek away trip to Eccleshall, who are the visitors to Silsden next Saturday.
