SILSDEN AFC 0 v 1 LITHERLAND REMYCA
Whewell 15. Att.112
BELOW PAR COBBYDALERS FAIL TO TOPPLE LEADERS
League leaders Litherland REMYCA F.C. were the visitors to the Cobbydale Construction Stadium on Saturday, on the back of a 3-2 home defeat at the hands ogf fourth placed Charnock Richard. The Cobbydalers, with a run of four games against the top four, were hoping to improve on last week’s defeat at the hands of City of Liverpool FC.
The Cobbydalers, who faced a strong wind in the first half, started positively with neither side dominating play but gradually the visitors began to exploit a home defence which lacked protection by the midfield. The play was far too casual. Colin McDonald broke through for REMYCA tobring a save from Jacovlevs. The ball fell to Lennon Whewell who crossed but the ball was finally gathered by the Silsden keeper.
The visitors took the lead on fifteen minutes when WHEWELL drifted through a sluggish defence to slide the ball home. REMYCA were cruising and opened up the Cobbydalers defence twice more with some slick passing. Connor Wright drove a low free kick across the Silsden box but there were no takers.
The Cobbydalers finally rose from their slumber after thirty minutes but a passing move broke down with Eastwood offside. The closest the Yorkshiremen came to scoring was when Wademan chased a through ball but Stephen King just managed to nick the ball away.
The visitors used the wind well and only a great interception by Illingworth denied the visitors another chance. A brilliant save by Jacovlevs from a Whewell shot kept Silsden in the game. Then the keeper flicked away an in-swinging corner.
The wind favoured Silsden in the second half but the Reds still lacked urgency. REMYCM got two banks of four behind the ball to frustrate the Cobbydalers. It wasn’t rocket science and something the home side should think about. However they did create enough chances to have won the game. A superb low cross from Danny Bunch on the right eluded both Eastwood and Storrie.
Eastwood then broke through three times, running onto through balls. His first effort was blocked by Jake Connor then Lake fumbled the second before finally gathering the ball. Eastwood missed the target with a low shot a minute later.
Josh Kaine intercepted a ball, burst forward into the box to find himself in the clear but he blasted his shot high and wide. Illingworth was a rock at the back, a danger with long throw-ins and in the visitors’ penalty area. Two headers from Illingworth caused mayhem in the visitors’ defence and Conner twice cleared off the goal-line. Illingworth finally netted from a corner but he was pulled up for an infringement.
There were few forays up the field by the visitors but they held on to their lead through strong defence to maintain their position at the top of the table.
Both Danny Forrest and Matt McNeil were disappointed. Forrest said “We were sluggish in both halves and after the progress we have made, we took our foot off the gas. We were too open in the first half and then not clinical enough in the second.” McNeill highlighted the need to make quick decisions and to support the man on the ball. “Players need to take more responsibility”.
On Tuesday the Cobbydalers travel to Charnock Richard and then to Whitchurch Alport on Saturday. Forrest will be looking for better performances!
