MATTHEW MOSES REACHES 200 APPEARANCES

 MATTHEW MOSES  reaches 200 appearance

Matthew Moses played his 200thgame for the Cobbydalers in the recent win against Chadderton F.C.,  despite his dad being a professional rugby league player  who played for Keighley and Halifax and had two years in Australia.

Matthew has always wanted to play football although he represented Holy Family school at rugby, athletics (long-distance running) besides football and he now enjoys squash.

Matthew joined Burnley as an eight year old, having been to the trials with local lads, Ben Geary,  Oliver Peacock and  Josh McNulty.  Current team mates Callum Jacovlevs and Charlie Holt were also at Burnley  but playing in a younger team.

Along with Burnley’s first team, Matthew trained at Burnley’s school of excellence, Gawthorpe Hall. He played teams such as Bradford City, Preston North End, Carlisle, Bury, Oldham Athletic, Rochdale and Accrington, on a regular basis but also the odd games against Everton and Man City were thrown in, as they had Academies and Burnley was a centre of excellence

Like so many schoolboys, at the age of sixteen Matthew was released. “ I was gutted not to have been taken on after eight years with the club.  I was picked up by Thackley and played mainly for the Under 19’s and reserves, with a few substitute appearances from the bench.”

“I remember playing against Silsden Under 19’s with which at lot of my mates were playing so I joined them. I was managed by ‘legends’ Jez Fay and Andy Gaughan. We won the League and the Cup.  I loved it, playing with my mates, including present first-teamers Will Storrie and Chris Wademan. We had  great team spirit.

My debut was against Runcorn Town (24th March 2012) when we lost 3-0 against one of the three teams fighting for the title.  My most memorable match was on August 22nd2015,  Alsager Town away. We went a man down with around half an hour to go and were holding on for a point, when Alsager scored with twenty minutes to go. However, in added time, Wadey turned into ‘Lionel Messi’ and took five players on before scoring. A point would have been a fantastic result but then a long kick was followed up by  Zach Dale lobbing the keeper who was off his line.  I have only scored one goal for the Cobbydalers, that against West Didsbury and Chorlton in a six-one victory. The report from 13th April 2015  read “Nicholls outpaced Settle and crossed into the box to MOSES, who had run 60 yards and drilled it into the net.”     I think my best ever performance was, surprisingly, in the 6-1 loss to Harrogate Railway.”

Speaking about other players Matthew comments. “I have playedwith numerous players, too many to count. When I first played there were the likes of Andy Lee, Netsy, Kev Ryan, all older heads with lots of experience, who helped young lads like me and Wademan. Then there are a few of current team including Storrie and Wademan, who have come through under 19s together and  Kaine and Hancock who came in last season. It's always good when you’re playing with your mates for so long at this level which I am fortunate to do.  The future! Another two hundred for the Cobbydalers.!!”

What his team mates have said.

Chris Wademan on Matty Moses -                                                                             "Whether it's on or off the pitch, Matty is one of my best mates. 200 appearances for the same club at 22 years old show how much of a legend he is at Silsden AFC. He is "Mr Reliable" and never has a bad game. I've played a lot of games alongside him whether it's in the first team or under 19's. During some of those we've had a partnership down the right hand side and, knowing he was behind me, meant I could always be lazy and never get back! We have this stupid superstition where I carry his water bottle off and he will always pick up some grass and test how bad the wind is. The engine he has is something else. He's always the one lapping everyone in training and does set the standard of how fit the rest of us should be. He's not perfect though - he's the dodgiest fines man I've ever had met  and I'm not sure how he gets away it! He's definitely a future captain, that's for sure! The loyalty he has shown through the tough times we have had is fantastic. Congratulations on this achievement Moses mate.  Here's to another 200 more!"

Will Storrie on Matty Moses -                                                                                                "I think it's great that Matty has made it to 200 appearances and it shows his commitment to the club. You don't often see players at this level reaching that many appearances for the same club, let alone at 22 years old. He's a great lad to have in your team, as he can play almost anywhere. Let's hope that he stays for another 200 and helps push Silsden forward."

Kev Ryan on Matty Moses -                                                                                        "200 games is testament not only to Matty's fantastic commitment and dedication, but ultimately his quality. I remember him breaking into the first team 5/6 years ago and he's never looked back, whilst many other players have come and gone! As a forward you could rely on a quality delivery and as a centre half I was always more confident with Matty in the back four. His positional sense and talking made us all look better too! Best wishes to a top player and top lad."
