SILSDEN AFC 2 v 1 ALSAGER TOWN FC
McNally 37, 84
McNALLY BRACE SILENCES THE BULLETS
The Cobbydalers, having lost narrowly last week, faced promotion hopefuls Alsager Town, hoping that the recent signings had settled into the team, having had more training sessions. However, it was the visitors who started on the front foot, almost laying siege on the Silsden goal in the opening minutes. Mark Grice went close with a header after a deep cross from Dave Walker. However, such was the intensity of the “Bullets” start, it was no surprise when they took the lead after only five minutes, Paul TAYLOR curling in a free kick from the edge of the Silsden area.
Silsden were shell-shocked and it took them a while to settle. The back four began to repel the visitors attacks and there were odd breaks forwards from the Yorkshiremen but their first effort on target was easily saved by Fletcher. The Cobbydalers needed some inspiration and it came from Josh Eastwood who, after running into the Alsager box, saw his first effort headed clear. With the forwards tightly marked and stalemate in the midfield, it was Eastwood who looked the most likely to score. Midway through the half, the Silsden midfielder was thwarted twice by excellent saves from Fletcher.
Ten minutes before the break only a magnificent save from Callum Jacovlevs kept Silsden in the game. However, a moment later Silsden were level. The ball was moved from the back to Mark Trueman who burst forward to hit a low shot from twenty five yards out. Fletcher fumbled the ball and Nicky McNally drove it home. Silsden finished the half with a decisive move down the right. Danny Bunch sped to the byline before pulling the ball back to Eastwood whose rasping drive just shaved the far post.
From having looked so commanding in the early stages of the half, the visitors found themselves defending more from the restart. Bunch, after another pacey run down the right, crossed to McNally, who volleyed straight into the keeper’s arms. The Bullets next thrust was halted by Josh Kaine, who along with Dan Illingworth, looked solid at the back.
The Cobbydalers began to push the ball about with confidence, patiently maintaining the ball until an opening was spotted. That came on fifty-five minutes when Eastwood broke clear of the defence but, with only Fletcher to beat, he hesitated and the keeper gathered the ball.
Silsden might have been awarded a penalty had the referee noticed that a clash between Fletcher and McNally ended with the keeper bringing down the Silsden forward before he gathered the ball. It wasn’t easy to spot but the referee missed a blatant hand ball in the Bullets area, and awarded the Cobbydalers a corner instead.
Minutes later, the referee Mr. John Dillnut went down with a knee injury. After ten minutes the official was deemed fit to continue but three minutes later he finally decided he couldn’t carry on. He was replaced by Charles Veighey, who immediately gained the respect of the players. Mr Peter Hanson took over the assistant’s flag!
Aaron David, who had impressed Danny Forest in the Development Squad games, replaced Luke Taylor and immediately sped up the left to slide the ball behind the retreating Alsager defence. McNALLY was too quick for them and he slid the ball under the visitor’s keeper. Minutes later he drove a shot across the goal after latching onto a through ball from Charlie Holt. Silsden saw out the game without further threats from the visitors.
Forrest was delighted with the performance “Great effort and commitment. The defence is looking much tighter with the addition of Dan Illingworth. On another day McNally might have had four, but he has that eye for goal. Eastwood covered the whole pitch and could have had a hat-trick himself.” Trueman protected the defence and Hancock worked his socks off keeping the ball moving. New boy Danny Bunch, looks a really good asset. He provided some great balls into the box. The new players are beginning to settle and hopefully we should get a few more wins under our belt from now on."
Next Saturday the Cobbydalers travel to St. Helens.
