BREWERS TOO GOOD FOR PLUCKY COBBYDALERS
The Cobbydalers travelled to the i2i Ground ,Tadcaster to take on the “Brewers” in the Quarter final of the West Riding County Cup on Tuesday night. Two leagues separated the teams but the Cobbydalers took a surprise lead with TRUEMAN’s sixth minute penalty after Will Storrie had cut into the Albion box onto Josh Kaine’ astute pass, only to be tripped by Jordan Armstrong.
Moments earlier a downward header had struck the Silsden bar, before being cleared, and, just after the penalty, Josh Barrett headed inches wide. The Brewers had won the North Counties East league last season and boasted a host of players with lots of experience at higher level football including Jonathan Greening, who had been in the Manchester United squad which won the treble in 1999. Greening almost levelled the score on fourteen minutes with a low shot which was inches wide
However, lifted by the opening goal, the Cobbydalers pressed forwards with Mark Trueman hitting a ball to Will Storrie who managed to get in a low shot which Gary Steven’s gathered at the second attempt. The Brewers then began to pass the ball with more precision and pace, although their equaliser on twenty minutes was rather fortuitous. Josh Kane managed to block Rob Youhill’s cross but Sam Jacomb’s clearance was charged down and Carl STEWART levelled the scores. Seven minutes later, while appealing for offside, the Silsden defence lost concentration allowing Youhill time to drive in a cross, which struck the bar. Connor SELLARS, with his back to goal, bicycle-kicked the ball home from close range.
The Silsden defence managed to hold out until half time with some sterling work from Kaine and Moses, whilst Storrie went close at the other end. Tom Henderson replaced the injured Will Storrie after ten minutes of the second half but it was the tall, muscular Tadcaster defenders who were in charge. The home side should have extended their lead on sixty minutes but Carl Stewart headed Youhill’s pin-point cross wide.
However STEWART made amends when he followed up Callum Jacovlev’s fine save to slide the rebound home on sixty-three minutes. Three minutes later Silsden allowed GREENING too much time to pick his spot to make it 4-1.
The Cobbydalers might have folded but they responded by replacing McNally and Sultan with Ben Cox and Robert Foulds. Kyle Hancock always posed the best outlet in the Silsden attack and he netted immediately after the substitutions, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside. Cox nearly pulled a goal from a cross from Hancock and Eastwood was just wide with a twenty five yard drive. Kaine denied the home side a fifth before the final whistle went.
Danny Forrest was a little despondent by the scoreline but recognised that the Brewers had experience and age on their side. “This is a young Cobbydalers side which we are developing. We haven’t the resources of Tadcaster but we have lads who are willing to strive to improve. It was always going to be a tall order to reach the semi-finals for the second year running.” TADCASTER ALBION.
