SILSDEN AFC 3 v 2 PRESTWICH HEYS FC Wademan 16, 32, Eastwood 34. Baguley 80, Wood 88. Att. 112
WADEMAN MAKES IT A HAPPY NEW YEAR FOR COBBYDALERS
The Cobbydalers ran out winners in a compelling encounter on Saturday, thanks to a superb performance in the opening half, which saw them lead three goals to nil at the break. Two late goals by the visitors Prestwich Heys gave the match a nervous finish but the Silsden lads moved up to thirteenth in the table.
Seventh placed Prestwich were the in-form team, having won their last three games scoring fourteen and conceding only two. They should have taken the lead in the first minute when Jamie Baguley drove a low cross in to the Silsden goal area. Neither Adam Nuttall nor Greg Wills could get the necessary touch on it. Matty Moses blocked a long shot from Lee Bruce and Josh Eastwood deflected Baguley’s free-kick for a corner.
The Cobbydalers settled and new signing, Niall Sultan, hit the ball out to Will Storrie on the left. Storrie found Chris Wademan in space. The Silsden striker’s effort cleared the bar. Sultan almost set up Wademan with an under-hit pass before the “Tasmanian Devil” had a near miss. Storrie shot over before the Cobbydalers were awarded a corner. Mark Trueman curled the ball in, Sam Jacomb headed it goal-wards and WADEMAN volleyed home from close range.
Heys keeper Daniel Taberner saved a shot from Josh Eastwood and then he tipped a volley, from Sultan, over the bar. Trueman hit a delicate pass for Storrie to run onto but the flag was raised for offside. However Silsden wouldn’t be denied a second. Trueman set up WADEMAN who drove the ball under the advancing keeper to make it two nil on thirty two minutes.
Two minutes later the Cobbydalers went three up. It was a classic Silsden move, the ball coming from the back through the midfield to Sultan who sped up the right flank, outpacing the visitor’s defence. Sultan drove the ball along the byline and Josh EASTWOOD rifled it home at the near post.
Prestwich responded immediately with Baguley pulling the strings. His superb cross, from the left, went begging before Moses denied Bruce a chance. Three minutes before the break the visitors almost pulled one back. Bruce chipped the ball into the box and Adam Nuttall hit a sumptuous volley from barely six yards out. Jacovlevs had no right to stop the shot but he pushed it over the bar! The corner was swung in and Baguley headed wide, before the halftime whistle went. It had been Silsden’s best half of the season to date but the final minutes of the half showed the Cobbydalers would still have a fight on their hands. In the opening minutes of the second half Reece had a shot blocked then Jacovlevs saved from Wills. Silsden broke on the counter but Jacomb, Wademan and Sultan found the Heys’ keeper with their headers.
Prestwich then forced a corner, on the right, which was punched clear by Jacovlevs, and then one from the left which was cleared by Danny Vincent. On sixty minutes Jacovlevs failed to gather a low shot but Josh Kaine was on hand to clear the ball. Substitute, Dom Slaven drove the ball back but into the side netting.
Jacomb was cautioned when he broke up one attack illegally, and from the resulting free-kick Lee O’Brien’s shot was blocked, but only to Baguley who was denied by another acrobatic save from Jacovlevs. The Cobbydalers were riding their luck with Kyle Hancock and Truman prominent in breaking up attacks.
Kaine was keeping it tight at the back but finally the Cobbydalers succumbed to the pressure. BAGULEY finally pulled a goal back with a powerful shot ten minutes from time. The Cobbydalers were rattled and lost some concentration, when a free kick from Baguley found Jacob WOOD totally un-marked on the goal line. Three-two with two minutes to go plus stoppage time! It was a nervous ending for the Cobbydalers. Paul Tierney set up Willis but Kaine snuffed out the danger but Silsden played time out in an attacking corner.
It had been a thrilling match and Danny Forrest was delighted with the result and performance. “It was a nervous last few minutes but the strength of squad is pushing every player to strive to get into the team and perform to their upmost. The mood in the camp is very positive.”
On Tuesday the Cobbydalers travel to Tadcaster Albion in the West Riding FA County Cup Quarter Final and on Saturday they travel to Cheadle Town.
