FORREST DELIGHTED WITH POWER-PLAY
The Cobbydalers cruised into the third round of the County Cup with a slick performance against Armthorpe Welfare. Manager Danny Forrest was delighted with the response from the players. “I asked the lads to move the ball quickly on the slick surface. The pace and movement of the players was excellent and we created numerous chances by stretching our opponents. Everyone did their job but the engine house of Connor Erangey and Josh Eastwood kept the momentum going throughout the game”
Nicky McNally had an early shot which was just off target and Leon Smith broke through the Welfare defence but just pushed the ball too near to keeper Will Biggs. Armthorpe’s first attack saw Sean Goodwin outwit Josh McNulty on the right before hitting a superb cross into the box which Luke WILLIAMS headed home on twelve minutes.
Silsden responded immediately with a cross from Ross Wilson setting up Leon Smith, who saw his powerful drive charged down. A superb cross from Storrie, on the left, found Nicky McNALLY who rifled home the equaliser on twenty minutes. Silsden pressed hard and several shots ricocheted off Armthorpe defenders in a game of “Bagatelle”; Sam Jacomb being the closest to putting Silsden in front.
The visitors defended in depth as Biggs saved from McNally, before Storrie had a header cleared off the line. Josh Eastwood’s shot was deflected for a corner before Armthorpe broke free. Connor Erangey lost possession but Garry Collier wasted a good chance for the visitors.
Silsden took the lead following a classic passing move involving seven players, WILSON finishing in style four minutes from the break. Three minutes later Erangey hit a defence-splitting pass, which McNALLY latched onto, to make it three on the stroke of halftime.
Four minutes into the second half Erangey hit a sumptuous cross-field ball to Storrie who crossed for McNALLY to complete his hat-trick. Three minutes later Danny RILEY (on for Wilson) swivelled in the goal area before hitting the back of the net to make it five.
Armthorpe’s left back denied the Cobbydalers further goals with two headers at the back post. Riley’s left foot shot lacked enough power to beat Biggs and McNally wasted a chance created by Eastwood before he was replaced by Michael Garnett. Garnett was soon into the action setting up SMITH for a sixth, a goal forged in Oxenhope. Moses, Riley and Storrie might have added further goals in the dying minutes but the result was still a big confidence boost for the reds.
Halifax Town, after a 8-1 defeat of Ossett Albion, are the next opponents in the competition but before then the Cobbydalers have important League matches against St. Helens Town (home on Saturday) and Daisy Hill (away on Monday).
