SILSDEN AFC 2 V 1 CARLISLE CITY
Wademan 43, 82, Errington 27(pen) Att. 102
WADEMAN BRACE KEEPS COBBYDALERS ON THE UP.
Two goals from Chris Wademan extended the Cobbydalers unbeaten run to four games in a keenly fought contest against, new boys, Carlisle City.
The Cobbydalers were without Danny Forrest and Luke Richardson but Kevin Ryan stepped in to the back four. The Cobbydalers were soon on the attack with James Gill, with a header and Nicky McNally, with a shot, both having shouts for a penalty turned down. Kyle Hancock had a shot charged down and Gill shot over, having turned his marker.
Ryan Errington had the “Sky Blues” first effort but his shot lacked power. Silsden pushed forwards with Gill having another shot blocked following a one-two between Will Storrie and McNally saw an effort well saved by James Greenall.
Gradually the Cumbrians settled with Errington having two efforts blocked by Moses, a corner being the end result. Callum Jacovlevs made an excellent save to deny David Wallace at the back post. Storrie went on another run down the right but the ball was cleared to Mark Worrall, who cut inside Kane, only to curl his effort wide.
Jamie Longley then conceded a penalty after Worrall had raced between Kane and Josh Eastwood. ERRINGTON hammered home the spot kick leaving Jacovlevs helpless. Kane had two more efforts following corners but the Cobbydalers were lucky not to concede a second when a move involving Jamie Heath, Worrall and Errington ended with the former hitting a drive but it lacked power.
Kane spun in the visitors’ area but saw yet another shot charged down by a resolute defence. However, the Cobbydalers equalised two minutes from the break when the persistence of WADEMAN created an opening which he hammered home. A vital goal at a vital time!
Gill won several headers in the second half creating problems for the visitor’s defence as the Cobbydalers attacked with pace. Longley was injured and Tom Marshall came on into the left back spot. Matty Moses moved to his natural right back position and Josh Eastwood moved into the midfield.
Eastwood immediately looked like the “box to box” player needed in the midfield. The Cobbydalers began to attack down the middle and the flanks. Gill’s prowess in the air set up Storrie down the right but his cross sped across the Sky Blues area with no one getting a touch. A superb cross from Moses should have led to a goal but Storrie got in Gills’ way.
City were pushed back but still a threat on the break. Ryan’s experience told when he halted Dean Croziers’s run. Following a mazy dribble, Wademan then proceeded to blast a clear chance over the bar. Fifteen minutes into the second half Carlisle raised their game but both Worrall and Errington failed to stretch the Silsden keeper.
Ryan cleared up a breakaway before Leon Smith replaced McNally. Storrie and Moses played some dazzling football down the right and Smith fizzed a ball across the face of the goal. Storrie hit another ball into the path of Eastwood, who saw his shot blocked.
Silsden should have been home and dry but Carlisle were still in the game. A swift move down the right ended with Errington firing over the bar, whilst at the other end Eastwood, again, went close.
Ten minutes to go. Storrie picked up the ball down the right and burst to the edge of the area. The defence was stretched and Storrie fed WADEMAN who slid home the crucial goal.
The visitors pushed forwards into a crowded Silsden box but Ryan, Kane and Jacovlevs made sure the visitors went home pointless.
Not the goal bonanza of Saturday but nevertheless a compelling game with the Yorkshiremen just shading it. Gilly was delighted. “Unbeaten in four and eighth in the league. The lads took a while to settle at the start of the season but they have come good and have worked well as a team. Without the experience of Forrest and Richardson, this was a great performance.”
On Saturday the Cobbydalers visit Knaresborough Town in the F.A. Vase.
