           ROLLER COASTER RIDE FOR COBBYDALERS

The Cobbydalers travelled to “The Venue” for their match against  F. C. Oswestry Town, League new boys, who were formed in 2013. The Venue is the home of The New Saints who have won the Welsh league ten times include five in the last five years and they have also played in the “Champions League” .

Heavy rain throughout the morning was no problem as the Venue has an artificial surface which made for a pacey game. Danny Forrest returned for the Cobbydalers. The game was certainly entertaining, with attackers dominating.  By fifty-five minutes the Cobbydalers were four-one down and looking down the barrel of a gun, but a stunning gaol from Kyle Hancock gave the Yorkshiremen hope and, by ninety minutes, they were leading by two goals and Town were down to ten men.

The Cobbydalers couldn’t kill the game, or rather they continued to throw men forwards. They were punished by two late goals in stoppage time but even then they might have stolen all three points had Forrest or Chris Wademen netted from close range. At the end there was some disappointment from the manager but Gilly said “At four-one down I would have been delighted with a point, especially having seen Luke Richardson limp off midway through the first half.”

When Forrest had shot wide after only three minutes, Town attacked with some slick passing but Josh Kaine managed to clear the danger. However, they opened their account on seven minutes when Twunda MELUSI’s shot from the edge of the box went in off the cross bar. Two minutes later Richardson’s cross was knocked down by Kaine and FORREST levelled the scores. Forrest went close on two more occasions after good runs from Kyle Hancock and Leon Smith had set him up.

Cobbydalers’  keeper,  Callum Jacovlevs,  was then called into action saving from Melusi and Rob Shone. Gill replaced the injured Richardson and within a minute Lewis JARMAN had weaved his way through a slack Silsden defence to restore Town’s lead. At times there was a gap of twenty yards between Silsden’s back four and the midfield, a space which was exploited by Callum Graybrook who stole the ball off Smith before cutting inside Marshall. Fortunately Jacovlevs gathered the ball.

Melusi then shot wide before crossing to Ollie Jones, who blasted the ball over the bar. On the stroke of half time Jacovlevs sliced a clearance into the path of Liam MOLLOY, who made it 3-1.

The second half started with Silsden on the attack but Nicky McNally’s low shot rebounded off a post. Then Gill headed to Forrest, who laid the ball to Smith. His shot was blocked and Town launched another attack but, despite the Silsden defence being caught out, MELUSI missed a good chance. However the striker was soon to make it four, outpacing Kaine before sliding the ball home.

Silsden were beginning to look ragged as the Shropshire side placed some slick “pass and move” football. McNally shot high over the bar at the other end after good work from Smith. The visitors needed some inspiration and HANCOCK’s stunner did the trick. A minute later a cross ball from Forrest found McNally who saw his shot fumbled into his own net by Connor Tinsley to make it 4-3.

At the other end Melusi set up Mulloy, who shot high and wide, before the scorer of two goals was shown a red card following an altercation with Wademan. Two minutes later it was all square when Wademan sent the ball up the right where McNally crossed into the path of SMITH who had burst into the goal area. 4-4.

On seventy one minutes Silsden took the lead. Hancock threaded a pass through to McNally who shot low. Tinsley saved the shot but it slid under his body and, in the act of trying to gather it, he pushed it into the net.4-5.

A crunching tackle by Gill saw the manager release Forrest. The ball was moved swiftly to Smith but the winger’s effort was blocked by Ryan Mondiwa. Back came Town and two crosses fizzed across the Silsden area without anyone getting a touch. Storrie replaced Smith and immediately raced up the left crossing to Wademan, who cut inside the left back only to shoot wide. Still 4-5!

With time running out a one two between Storrie and HANCOCK ended with the latter netting from close range. 4-6. Game over?  It should have been, but!

The game went into stoppage time. Oswestry attacked down the right, Marshall, in his attempt to clear hit the ball  back across his own area in to the path of left back, Brendon PRICE who netted a fifth. 5-6.

Despite all Silsden’s efforts, Durrell sped down the right and substitute, Rick LITCHFIELD netted an equaliser. 6-6.

From the kick off the Cobbydalers went for the winner. Forrest cut into the box but, like Wademan, his shot was inches wide.

          This really was “Unbelievable  Jeff!

The Cobbydalers are now top scorers in the league with 23 goals  in seven games. On Tuesday they face Carlisle City at the Keighley Road ground. Watch this space!
