JAKOVLEVS DENIES HOLKER WITH BREATHTAKING SAVES

Thirteen years ago when the Cobbydalers moved into the NWCFL League the teams met up at Holker in the FA Cup (Silsden’s first outing in the competition and still their best run). Holker were leading as the ninetieth minute arrived but, with delaying tactics, the game went on and on until GILL notched a 97th minute equaliser.

Holker won the replay at Cougar Park 3-2 with Jamie Longley netting  a “screamer” on ninety minutes.

Eleven years on the teams met again in the League and LONGLEY opened the scoring on two minutes, when a corner from the right was hit back into his path by Josh Kane. In the opening minute Silsden had  a penalty claim turned down when McNally’s shot seem to hit a defenders hand on the goal line.

Following consecutive away defeats the Cobbydalers were more proactive, with the pace of Storrie and McNally testing the visitors. Storrie might have made it two but his effort hit the side netting. However the second goal was not long in coming, WADEMAN bursting through from the edge of the box to drive in a low shot.

Holker’s first shot came two minutes later but  Kaine blocked Jamie Pattinson’s effort. McNally might have made it three with a snap-shot but Calum McElroy managed to gather at the second attempt.

The only other player to play in the Cup game eleven years ago was Holker’s David SWARBRICK. He had netted the winner in the replay  and now, just like Longley , he scored Holker’s opener with a powerful shot, which left Calum Jacovlevs helpless.

The visitors were lifted by the goal and they created several good openings as they moved the ball about swiftly. Kevin Watkin was wide with a free kick before Jacovlevs denied the midfielder with a diving save.

When McNulty was injured he was replaced by Leon Smith, a pacey winger, and Tom Marshall moved to left back. Marshal  has pace himself but neither he nor Smith had the pace of Chris Wraighte who, time after time, broke down the right. The half ended with Wraighte  hitting a cross- shot which Jacovlevs tipped past the far post.

The second half started with both sides determined to attack. Kaine halted another run by Wraighte before McNally broke down the right and crossed into the Holker area.

Another penalty shout was turned down as STORRIE appeared to be tripped. However the winger had the last word putting the Cobbydalers 3-1 up following a break down the left by Smith.

The visitors responded with a break of their own and Richardson conceded a penalty. Watkin hit a powerful spot kick but Jacovlevs, diving to his left, tipped it over the bar.

Silsden then broke down the left. Smith outpaced the visitor’s defence and McElroy advanced off his line. Smith won the chase for the ball but clattered into the keeper who was injured and had to be substituted. A yellow card for the Silsden winger seemed harsh. Forward, Sam Joel took over in the visitors’ goal.

With twenty minutes to go Jacovlevs was in the action again saving two close range efforts leaving the fans speechless!

The Cobbydalers should have increased their lead  following penetrating runs from Smith, Wademan and Storrie, but the final touch made life easy for the stand-in keeper.

With twenty minutes left the visitors pulled a goal back. Watkin drove the ball in from the right and poor marking allowed SWARBRICK to add a second from close range.

The result was in doubt again and a heavy touch from Smith, after he had broken through, gave the visitors hope.

At the other end a scissors-kick from Brough cleared the bar, Hubbold saw his shot deflected for a corner and Gareth Smith shot over.

A run across the edge of the area by Wraighte, past four defenders, ended with a weak shot before McNally broke free but he was pushed wide by the stand-in keeper before Leon Smith again failed to punish a wide-open defence.

Jacovlevs made one last save before the final whistle went.

It was a vital win for the Cobbydalers with the outstanding performance by Jacovlevs.  Eastwood continued to look competent at right back and Richardson had his best game, showing composure and tenacity. However, with the injuries mounting and five cautions for the Cobbydalers, the squad is beginning to look lightweight.

Gilly’s reaction to the victory was one of satisfaction. “Jacovlevs saved us, although in reality, with the chances we had, we should have made life more comfortable for ourselves.”

On Tuesday the Cobbydalers entertain Daisy Hill FC
