BACUP BOROUGH FC 2 v 1 SILSDEN AFC

Barlow 10, Foster 35                            Forrest 80(pen)

The Cobbydalers visit to the Brian Boys West View Stadium resulted in another narrow defeat with, once again, the Yorkshire outfit conceding the first goal.  A second goal before the break made it even harder for Silsden and allowed Bacup to “camp” in their own area in the second half and play on the break. Despite their domination of territory and possession, the Cobbydalers only had four clear chances, Forrest’s penalty leading to a siege of the Boro goal in the last ten minutes.

Jamie Longley replaced Hancock in the midfield and Tom Marshall started in place of Nicky McNally.

Bacup’s main threat came from Jonathan Thompson, whose pace almost led to the opener on four minutes, Josh McNulty managing to clear at the expense of a corner. Silsden worked an opening when Chris Wademan and Danny Forrest combined but the formers’ shot was cleared by Adrian Bellamy.

The opening goal came on ten minutes. Silsden had conceded a corner which was hit to Thompson, who was at the edge of the penalty area. Thompson hit a magnificent curling volley to the far post. It was worthy of a goal but Matthew BARLOW tapped it home from close range.

Forrest was wide with a free kick at the other end but the Cobbydalers couldn’t open up the Bacup defence, with individuals in the team making good runs but without any end product.

On thirty minutes Darcy O’Connor split the Silsden defence and Thompson was on it in a flash. A fine save by Callum Jacovlevs denied the visitors a second but only for three minutes. Thompson found space behind McNulty and, although Josh Kane cleared for a corner, the Cobbydalers’ rear-guard could not prevent FOSTER heading in at the far post.

Thompson continued to torment the visitors’ defence whilst Silsden struggled to break through two lines of four as the home side “shut up shop.” Free kicks were wasted as the Silsden forwards failed to attack the ball.

The second half was totally different with the Cobbydalers moving the ball with more pace and purpose. Ten minutes into the half Kane was unlucky not to pull a goal back. Both Forrest and Luke Richardson shot wide whilst Kyle Hendley was excellent at the back for the home-side clearing a powerful header from Longley.

Silsden became increasingly frustrated as the home side tactics of “they shall not pass” resulted in four cautions for the Bacup outfit. Silsden were still vulnerable to the counter attack but Kane and Josh Eastwood defended well. McNally replaced Wademan who had looked the most likely to open up the home defence.

The Cobbydalers dominated possession and when Leon Smith replaced Marshall, his pace troubled the home defence.  Silsden were awarded a penalty twelve minutes from time which FORREST hammered into the top corner. Silsden pushed for the equaliser and were unlucky when Longley got through only to see his shot ricochet into the arms of the Bacup keeper. Longley also saw his overhead kick cleared.

Gilly thought the team had deserved at least a point  but once again the defending gave the opponents the lead which they defended with a mixture of skill, luck and desire, although some of the challenges were lucky not to result in more than just cautions.  “We dominated the second  half but we need to make sure we get off to a good start in future games and defend better as a team”.

On Saturday the Cobbydalers are at home to Holker Old Boys.
