Another Testing Time For The Cobbydalers
The game was played at a high tempo from the off with the Albion being driven on from the midfield.

Silsden Pre-Season 2016-17

SILSDEN AFC 1 v 2 ALBION SPORTS FC

The Cobbydalers had the experienced Luke Richardson back in mid-field for their fourth pre-season game against a very competitive Albion Sports.  Manager James Gill, who had come on a sub against Thackley was in the starting eleven, as was Jamie Longley.

The game was played at a high tempo from the off with the Albion being driven on from the midfield. Up front Danny Facey and Omar Habib combined well, testing the Cobbydalers defence early on. Michael O’Brien shot wide after Gill had been dispossessed.

The visitors took an early lead when,  in a crowded area, Silsden keeper Callum  Jacovlevs,  having just punched the ball clear,  failed to gather a follow-up lob and Facey drove the ball home. The visitors stretched the Cobbydalers with some slick interplay before the home side had their first effort from Danny Forrest, who had drifted across the penalty area only to shot narrowly wide.

On thirty minutes the visitors doubled their lead when O’Brien chipped the ball into the Silsden area, Facey took the ball on his chest, held off  Sam Jacomb  and swivelled to volley the ball home.

A swift move involving Leon Smith and Danny Forrest set up Luke Richardson who drove the ball firmly but wide of the target. Just after Nicky McNally had replaced Longley, Chris Wademan stole the ball on the half way and headed for goal. He managed to reach the edge of the goal area but had three defenders bearing down on him. His persistence took him past two before he squared the ball to Leon Smith, who hit it home.

Twice illegal challenges halted Silsden breaks on the half way-line, the visitors taking advantage of lenient/sensible refereeing! ---neither manager wanting to pick up unnecessary  cautions. Two minutes from the break a superb tackle from Josh Kane denied Facey his hat-trick.

The first fifteen minutes of the second half  saw a succession of substitutions  which led to re-organisation.  The Cobbydalers wasted four free-kicks which cleared attackers in the penalty area before, twenty minutes into the half , Gill managed to find Richardson at the back post. The ball sped off the ground but Kyle Trenery managed to tip it over the bar.

A pacey dribble by Storrie set up McNally but the striker had edged off-side . The visitors were being pushed back.  Habib   and one of the substitutes broke clear, tracked by Kane.  A two-on-one situation  but  the Cobbydalers’ skipper managed to clear the danger. Looking along the line both McNally and Henderson were caught off side before the latter gave the ball away.

An excellent run by McNally led to a chance but the ball was fumbled for a corner. Henderson’s  first corner was cleared for another which the substitute whipped in. Three Silsden forwards failed to get any contact on the in-swinger as it sped across the goal area. Five minutes from time another corner was cleared off the line to deny the Cobbydalers an equaliser.

Gill’s initial assessment was “not good enough” but,  in the cold light of day, the game had been very useful to get the players match-fit.  It was very competitive with some slick passing moves, especially from the visitors. Richardson and Kane had excellent games and there were cameos from the likes of Moses, Storrie and Wademan.  There are still problems to be addressed and questions to be asked before the season starts with an FA Cup trip to Bridlington on August 6th.

Next week the Cobbydalers are away at Campion on Tuesday, Burnley Athletic on Thursday and Hemsworth Miners Welfare on Saturday.
