            IN-FORM CHEADLE SPOIL THE PARTY

The season didn’t end quite as the Cobbydalers might have hoped, with a defeat against in-form Cheadle Town but, after a mid-season change of manager, the Silsden out-fit managed to finish in the top half of the league table.

The Cobbydalers were on the attack from the kick-off with Tom Henderson having a powerful drive saved by Jon McIlwaine in the opening minute. Nicky McNally then slid the ball across to Mark Everingham who saw his effort saved by the Cheadle keeper.

At the other end, ever-present Callum Jacovlevs made a vital save from Mike Sherrington, although the Cheadle striker appeared to foul Josh Kaine as he broke into the penalty area.  Silsden broke forwards again. Mark Trueman hit a deep cross to the far post where Danny Bunch managed to get his header on target. The keeper gathered the ball to set up  a counter attack, Kaine being beaten by the well timed-run of McIlwaine. Once again Jacovlevs was isolated but he managed to get a foot on the ball and Illingworth cleared the danger.

Both sides looked dangerous on the attack as Silsden went close again but Luke Pearson headed Dan Illingworth’s powerful header off the goal-line. Town broke forwards and Rhys WEBB outpaced to defenders to curl the ball wide of Jacovlevs for the opener. Webb, who had been picked up from  Sunday league football in October, had scored 24 goals before today’s match. He looked a class act.

The visitors began to dominate  possession as Silsden struggled to put any passing moves together. It wasn’t until the thirtieth minute that the Cobbydalers got back on the offensive. Left-back Danny Vincent sent McNally clear on the left. A through ball to Henderson resulted in another fine save by the Cheadle keeper.

Both sides sought openings but neither could find that killing pass and it looked as if the score would remain one-nil at the break. That was until WEBB latched onto a misplaced pass to make it two!

At the start of the second half, left-back Davison Banda cut inside Josh Eastwood and curled a right-foot shot just wide of Jacovlev’s left hand post.

Silsden kept possession but only by passing the ball back as many times they passed it forwards. Cheadle looked very comfortable and happy to sit back and soak up the pressure.  Gradually the Cobbydalers began to make inroads into the visitor’s half. Bunch burst down the right with Henderson failing to get a touch on the cross before the latter crossed for McNally, who was just beaten to the ball by McIlwaine. The keeper then saved from Eastwood.

After substitutions by both sides, Webb had a chance for his hat-trick but Kaine recovered well to keep Silsden in the game. Kaine then broke forwards and crossed to Trueman. There appeared to be a hand ball in the penalty area but the official waved play on.

Danny Forrest came on and Illingworth moved forwards. The centre half hit a powerful header goalwards in the dying minutes but McIlwaine made a fingertip save. In injury time the visitors broke clear to notch their third through Liam TONGUE.

Silsden weren’t at their best but there wasn’t a three goal margin between the teams. McIlwaine had a good day and the Silsden forwards were a little below par.

The end to a long season. The Cobbydalers finished in eleventh place in the table, winning twenty league games, losing  twenty and drawing two. The results might have been better had Will Storrie and Kyle Hancock not been out for the last nine games with serious injuries.

A short assessment might read “Improving but could do better”. This is still a young side and Danny Forest is always looking to improve the player’s technique and application. Certainly, since he took over the reins, the performances have been more positive.

Danny spoke to the players in the privacy of the changing room after the game and then three players received awards.   Josh Kaine was named “Manager’s player of the year”, Matty Moses the “Players’ player” and Callum Jacovlevs “Ever present” for playing in all 42 league games and all 11 cup games. Kaine had only missed out on 2.

On a lighter note Kaine and Dan Illingworth presented the rest of the players with some appropriate and humorous individual awards. The team spirit was amazing. A full report of the season will follow.
