SILSDEN AFC 1 v 0 CHADDERTON FC Eastwood 37 Att. 258
EASTWOOD CAPS FINE PERFORMANCE WITH THE WINNER
Following the narrow defeat away at City of Liverpool, Silsden returned to The CobbydaleConstruction Stadium for this Friday evening encounter against in-form Chadderton FC. The visitors had been on a four- match winning run which had pushed them up the table. In that run they had scored eighteen and concededthree.
Danny Forrest had Mark Trueman back in midfield whilst, with several regulars unavailable, the visitors included several youngsters.
There was much to admire in the opening half with forwards on both sides testing their opponent’s defences. The pace of Leon Iluobe was a constant threat for Chadderton, his first run into the Silsden box only being halted by a superb tackle from Danny Illingworth. The Chadderton side were forcefull in the early stages and Silsden took time to settle. Will Storrie’s fine run was halted, cynically, by Gareth Hill who was cautioned for the offence.
Chris Wademan and Josh Eastwood both created good openings for themselves but on both occasions their final shots lacked venom. Callum Jacovlevs denied the visitor’s the opener when he dived to thwart Iluobe who had managed to hold off Josh Kaine, in one of the pairs many battles.
The visitors were breaking swiftly from the back and Aaron Scholes burst into the box before seeing his shot cleared for a corner. Then Iluobe fired across the face of the Silsden goal. At the other end Storrie’s run from defence was halted by a foul. From the free-kick Kyle Hancock cut inside before hitting the side-netting then Wademan had another chance which was underhit. Similar chances fell to Storrie and Eastwood but, like Wademan, they couldn’t get enough power in their shots.
Kaine’s superb tackle denied James Curley then Dan Illingworth headed a dangerous cross to safety. A foul by Eastwood gave Chadderton a chance on the edge of the Silsden area but Matthew Crothers’ free kick sailed over the Silsden bar.
Finally the deadlock was broken. Trueman hit a low drive which keeper Michael Smith could only parry. EASTWOOD was on it in a flash to give the Cobbydalers the lead. Two minutes later Eastwood could have made it two, but he headed Bunch’s cross over the bar. Silsden finished the half the stronger team.
The second half lacked the excitement of the first becoming more a war of attrition rather than “The beautiful game”. It started with some football, Eastwood heading over, after good work by Bunch before Chadderton’s Chris Pauley’s mazy dribble ended with Matt Crothers firing high and wide. A run by Storrie was halted by a “he took one for the team” foul, thenIllingworth and Iluobe were both cautioned, both players having had good games! Finally Hill committed another cynical foul and received a second caution.
The crowd did see some football. Wademan’s run found Hancock, whose shot cleared the bar and Trueman’s free kick brought gasps from the bumper crowd as it sailed inches wide. A pacey run down the left by Moses, playing his two hundredth game for the Cobbydalers, brought a chance for substitute Tom Henderson but his effort was blocked. Further bookings followed in the final minutes when players got involved in a melee and the game ended with some of the players continuing individual spats.
Forrest was delighted with the result and the resolve of the team in a feisty encounter. The young Chadderton side saw their recent run ended. They havesome talented players who, had they concentrated on football, might have, at the least, enjoyed a share of the post. They didn’t and the Cobbydalers are growing in confidence as Forrest demands more and more from his players.
Next Saturday the Cobbydalers face a long trip toEccleshall, Staffordshire.
